This modified Sherman equipped extra plating to its hull front and sides as well as the turret front and sides. This armor plating made it frontally immune to <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.ronanmcdonald.com\/?p=102\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"102\">88mm<\/a> rounds. It needed these upgrades as it was designed to go through bunkers and defensive lines, where heavy fire was common. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strangely, it did not mount the upgraded 76mm cannon as built (which was not the same gun as on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.ronanmcdonald.com\/?p=133\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"133\">M5<\/a>, but a lighter model with the same ammo) but instead mounted the earlier 75 mm gun (which had similar performance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.ronanmcdonald.com\/?p=46\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"46\">M3 GMC<\/a>).
