Self Propelled guns are Anti-Tank guns mounted on some sort of mobile body. This allowed these vehicles to have much greater mobility. This mobility allowed formations using these SPGs to swiftly counter breakthroughs, as well as allowing greater firepower than armor when compared to their towed brethren. As WW2 progressed, AT guns became less common in several nations, like the US, who chose to operate SPGs instead in order to stay ahead of the firepower arms race.
