The Matilda was one of the few tanks that served throughout the entire war in various theaters from North Africa to the South Pacific. During her early service in North Africa, Matilda tanks were very difficult to destroy by enemy anti tank crews. However the deployment of new AT guns like the Pak 40 and the use of existing guns like the Flak 88 ended her domination of the theatre. During the early years of their service, Matilda tanks suffered from a chronic lack of HE shells, as all HE shells went to the AT gun crews because they were part of the Royal Artillery. It mounted the 2-pounder.
