The 88mm Flak 18 is a weapon with quite the reputation. Early in the war when Nazi forces ran into allied heavy armor, it was one of the few weapons that could deal with that armor. However, being an AAA gun, the gun was very tall, hard to conceal, and had limited depression.
During the desert campaign the Nazis became adept at luring in British tanks into traps led by these guns. One tank that particularly suffered from the 88mm was the British Matilda II, which, while initially dominant over weaker German and Italian AT guns and tanks, the tank suffered high losses once faced with 88mm AA gunsand 75 mm Pak 40 AT guns.
Later on Allied tanks like the Sherman Jumbo were built or modified to resist the firepower of the 88mm, often in order to facilitate the breakthrough of major Nazi defensive lines.
