AT mines are essential tools in the anti-tank toolkit. Mines allow areas to be blocked off, they can slow down assaults, and they can trap columns in ambushes. Mines can also be laid on roads to surprise the passing vehicle or convoy. Their wide variety of uses is why they are indispensable on the battlefield.
Early mines simply used a large high explosive charge, set off by a pressure fuse tuned for the heavy weight of a tank’s tracks driving over it. However, later mines incorporated shaped charges and magnetic or seismic fuzes into the design that improved anti tank ability, and allowed for mines to be set off by the vehicle’s main body instead of the tracks, increasing their area of effect.
